Brittany Matthews addresses social media toxicity

Brittany Matthews spoke candidly Tuesday about how she keeps her mental health in check amid toxicity on the internet.

In an Instagram Q&A, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked by a follower how she continues to go about her day-to-day life “with such grace in such a hateful world.”

“Honestly, I have no other choice!” Matthews began. “I would never let people on the internet destroy my peace or effect [sic] my life. BUT. It’s been hard, it took time to learn this and still learning at times.”

Matthews, along with Mahomes’ younger brother Jackson, have been targeted by online trolls in recent months, especially during the Chiefs’ 2021 playoff run. Both have been scrutinized for their game-day actions, with Matthews catching heat in January for spraying champagne into the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Current co-owner fought back against critics at the time by launching “Team Brittany” shirts with plans to donate the proceeds to a local anti-bullying initiative.

Matthews said Tuesday that she’s “taken such huge steps away from social media” as a way to protect her inner peace.

“It’s always gonna be there, at times its worse then [sic] others & at those times is when you won’t see me on here or the internet. Hence why I have taken such huge steps away from social media. It’s a toxic and horrible place at times and those are when I say peace out,” Matthews said.

“My world outside of social media is great. I have the right people around me always and that’s where I stay when people on here wanna be s—-y,” she continued. “Not my problem, bye 🤣.”

In a separate Instagram Story, Matthews told her 1.1 million followers that she’s enjoyed living in the present and not sharing every detail of her life online.

“Not really present on here as much, life is great and I enjoy not being on my phone and feeling like I have to share every last moment on here,” she said.

Matthews and Mahomes, both 26, tied the knot in Hawaii last month. The couple — who have been together since high school — became husband and wife in front of their friends and family, including their 1-year-old daughter Sterling Skye.

Matthews and Mahomes later departed Hawaii for a romantic honeymoon in St. Barths.
